how do you join blanket yarn?

i usually leave knots in my work. however i’m doing a project that i don’t want any knots in. so i’m trying the method of just bringing the new yarn onto the loop in the middle of a stitch. sometimes i fasten off and start with a slip stitch. and then working over the ends. but someone in a facebook group mentioned i should still be knitting my work? thoughts?
