Back and forth rows in the round

Hello fellow crocheters! :) This may be too vague a question but i was wondering if anyone is able to shine some light on back and forth rows in the round.... I'm following a pattern at the moment that is worked this way and at the end of every round you do a slip stitch to join and then turn 180 degrees before beginning the next round. I'm sure I must be missing something/doing it all wrong but I'm having a hard time understanding how this is different to just working simply in the round and joining with a slip?? Does anyone here use this method? Any help would be hugely hugely appreciated!
