I'm about to start a project that I estimate will take 6 months to 1 year. (Couch slip cover)

Given my kids will be age 1 and 3 upon completion I'm concerned of roughness, spills, and the unimaginable.

I'm curious if anyone did a major project that went through damage and how you either repaired it, or attempted to prevent the same issue occuring in the future.
