Trying to remember name of a stitch

I cannot remember the name of this stitch, I've only done it in one pattern. You create a single crochet (or half or double, whatever you're working with) but also create a chain space that your next stitch is worked into. So you can continue building a line without having a chain to work from. But I can't quite remember how to do it.
I only tried this once to build a heel for a sock and I'm not sure where that pattern got to, lol. Does this ring a bell to anyone?
