Sewing liners onto crochet bags with a sewing machine. Tips? Afraid to ruin my projects.

So basically I’ve been making crochet bags or clutches. In some way shape or form it’s basically a folded over rectangle. I was going to sew fabric along the inside before it is in bag form and then fold it up and single crochet the sides to form the bag. I’ve seen the wax/parchment paper trick. I just got a sewing machine and would love to do it using that. But do you keep the foot up? Otherwise I feel like it may be too thick compared to just fabric.
