I'm new to crochet so I've been making a lot or rags and I made two scarfs by making rows of 39 stitches until they were long enough. Now I'm making a scarf following this pattern and I'm very intimidated. I've moved onto to the second row (after counting the first one 5+ times) and come out with the wrong number twice.

Any tips for keeping tracking of that many stitches?

Note: I'm doing hdc in the 3rd loop on the front, which I'm also new to.
