I have a blanket idea but don't know how to execute it

I am currently working on a C2C granny shell blanket and I love the look. But I had an idea that I thought would look good---doing some double crochet along the way to add some textural difference. Increasing/decreasing the rows in granny shell is so easy but I don't know how to increase/decrease the double crochet along the way. Can anyone tell me how to do that? Or is there a pattern anywhere that I could follow to learn?
