Proper way to make a gradient?

If I'm doing a gradient between two colors (like light blue to slightly darker blue), should I always use equal amounts of color (example: 5 rows of Color A, 5 rows of Color A and B mixed, then 5 rows of Color B), or can I do fewer rows of the gradients (example: 5 rows Color A, 2 rows Colors A and B, 5 rows Color B)?
In your opinion, does it look better if it's all equal, will it have the same effect either way, etc.? So far, all the gradient patterns I'm seeing are equal parts, so just curious if that's the right way.
