Button band SOS!

I'm nearly done with my first cardigan, and it's all gone pretty well so far. Unfortunately I've found my enemy: the button band. I was about halfway through when I realized the stitches I was adding up the front were causing the cardigan to curl, as though there was a ripple effect all along the line where the buttons would be. I pulled out my stitches and tried again, this time spacing them out a bit more, but had the same problem. What do I do?
