Pattern: inches or stitches?

I'm a beginner trying to follow a basic sweater pattern and I cannot for the life of me get it to fit the gauge in the pattern. The pattern measures the different sweater pieces in inches as well as giving stitch counts -- would it be terrible if I just follow the inches and ignore the stitch counts? It's all double crochet, no fancy stitches.
