Why can I not make a flat circle?

Hi hookers. I am in distress.
I am trying to make a cat bed, with a flat bottom, as things of that sort should be. But, I cannot for the life of me get a circle that’s flat!!!
My first one was 8DC around, and it went really wiggly at the end. The next one was 6DC, but puckered right away. I am also using linked DC stitches instead of normal ones.
How do I crochet a flat circle with these specs? What am I doing wrong? My next thought is to start with 12DC, will that work? Help!
