Curious about wire crochet

I've been interested in working with wire fore a while, but my few attempts have all ended poorly. I want to make larger items but I'm either using the wrong wire or wrong hooks. Any advice would be appreciated.
I'd love to make small dice bags or larger chainmail shirts. What wire materials/gauges/hook sizes/hook composition do those of you working with wire use? Do you enjoy it as much as working with yarn? I'd love to branch out but I'm unsure where to start.
