Following my first crochet pattern - very confused on whether to turn work or not.

Hi, I am following this crochet pattern and have no idea what I am doing wrong.
The pattern for the ribbing starts out as:
With MC, ch 6 (all sizes). Row 1 (RS): Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc across row. (5 sts) Row 2: Sl st across row. Row 3: Ch 1, sc across row. The problem I am having is when I get to Row 2 I don't know if I should turn my work (to work from right to left) or somehow work from left to right without turning. When I do turn my work everything starts to get twisted and tangled, so I feel like it's not what I am meant to do. That and the pattern doesn't specifically tell me to turn.
If I really am not supposed to turn then I don't understand how to Sl st across the row.
