How to work with the wrong yarn size?

So, I want to make the Moogly Eloise sweater and matching bonnet for my nephew’s twin girls due this May. I bought yarn on Herrschners, not even paying attention to size (dumb I know). It got here and it’s 2-ply yarn (in US) and says to use and E hook; the pattern calls for worsted weight and a J hook and I don’t see a gauge for it. How do I adjust the pattern for the smaller yarn and hook? Or should I just double up the 2 ply to make it worsted weight?
