How to crochet so that a garment is not see through/ loosely made?

Crochet naturally kind of has gaps (or natural tiny holes) in between stitches So that technically you can kind of see through it. For example, in the stuff I make I could technically push my finger in between the stitches.

I’ve noticed that Clothes that are knit seem to work up slightly tighter. Is this just how crochet is or are there stitches/ a way to make a sweater so that the stitches are closer?
