Interesting thought to ponder

I was trying some crochet tonight using the crochet hook included in my Hedwig kit, and had something of an epiphany. The hook is a tiny 3.0mm golden thing, absolutely gorgeous. My other one that I was using for practice is 5.5mm.

The epiphany came when I was thinking about how crocheting with the smaller hook felt so much easier, and more natural. I suddenly thought that maybe the reason why it felt easier was precisely because it is a smaller hook.

For context, I am not a large person, I'm around 5'7 and have small hands. I have also been cross stitching for over a decade, which uses small needles, and at work, some of the stuff we use would be somewhere between 3.0mm and 5.5mm in size. To.me, it makes sense that the reason the smaller hook feels more natural is because I'm used to handling small things, whereas the 5.5mm hook always feels slightly clunky. That and the smaller hook fits my hand better.

I know larger hooks have their uses but when I realised I was holding the tiny hook the way I'd hold something similar at work, something just clicked. I crocheted a quick test swatch with the tiny hook and everything sort of, flowed. I am still working things out, like a couple of magic ring kinks but I'm feeling more hopeful now that I've had that mental breakthrough. Maybe now I can actually start getting to grips with this craft. Small hooks all the way.
