YARN SIZING?! I'M CONFUSED

So i'm fairly new at crocheting , ive made a few projects however something that's been confusing me and bugging me is the weight class system and sizing for yarn. I went yarn shopping today and saw yarn of vastly different thickness but all classified as a 1 in size. i don't know if anyone can explain or help me understand why yarn off the same size will still be different thicknesses abs how to tell the difference of shopping online.
