Twisting braid crochet blanket - help!

Twisting braid crochet blanket - help!

Hi all,

I was hoping to make a cozy blanket with some super bulky yarn (lion brand #6) that I bought. I'm a beginner and this will be my first big project (I've only made a bunch of practice gauges with stitches I've learned, and made my dog a baby blanket with single crochet stitches). I searched around for a pattern and fell in love with the one (linked below) because it gives the braided look while being (seemingly) FAR less complicated than other patterns with a braided element. I think the braid will add some interesting texture to a blanket that will be all one color (I was afraid to try >1 color yet as I thought it might complicate things), and it's the easiest-looking pattern I could find anywhere with a big braided element.

However... I am very, very confused as to how I should finish this project. The pattern says to slip stitch across the top and bottom and then add a fringe. But, looking at a video for the same pattern, but for a pillow (see last link), it looks like the chain links after you twist them all together end in a big bulky loop. (The blogger from the post I initially found linked to this video in the comments, so I think it's the same exact pattern, just smaller). How are you supposed to integrate those into the slip stitch across the row? I have not been able to find, absolutely anywhere, guidance on how you should tie off/secure these big loops at the top of the project.

Has anyone tried this pattern who can offer advice on this? Or, better yet, has anyone found a video tutorial? I've searched for at least 2 hours trying to figure this out, and I'm stuck. I could give up and find a different pattern (hopefully one with more thorough instructions and/or a video), but I'm excited about this project. And I want to make something I'm excited about since I spent $60 on yarn. :^(

A smaller, less important question: why are there 14 dc in the first row? After that, you repeat stitches in sets of 12 and 16?

Thank you, r/crochet! I don't like to post on reddit unless I've exhausted every other possible option and researched thoroughly myself, because I don't want to burden others with something obvious. I am really quite stuck and also stubbornly set on this pattern - I've found it discouraging to navigate the many posts of "beginner" patterns that seem impossible. This one seems feasible if I can just figure out how to finish it.
