Wool smells AWFUL

I’m making a sweater using a new yarn, 85% wool, 15% alpaca, I noticed it smelled a little funny, so when I blocked it I used some sented fabric softener, and dear god does it smell worse. Since I got it wet the smell had magnified 500%, I can barely use it. How do I get rid of this smell?? I’m so sad to think this mostly done sweater is wasted…
