Sugar n' cream cotton yarn question

I was just working on some wash cloths and I noticed my sugar n' cream yarn was knotted together about half way through the ball and then the yarn changed texture and was very stiff and thin. After about a row it changed back. Has anyone else had this happen? If it wasn't for just a wash cloth I would have been so mad 😂. I'm kind of new to this, is there a better cotton yarn brand? Thanks in advance guys!
