Help with downsizing an amigurumi pattern?

I read a post asking the same thing on r/Amigurumi three years ago but I am still quite confused. I recently found this pattern I love and even started to make it, but I want to make another one for a friend and honestly 10 rounds of 72 sc crochets for multiple parts has been quite hurtful to my hands (I am strengthening my arms for future products, I just would like to finish this gift soon!), so is there a way I can downsize a pattern to half its size without changing my yarn weight?
If I half each round, do I start my magic circle with 6 or 3? If I start my magic circle with 6, when do I start halving the number of stitches per round? Am I able to just eyeball the size I want and just stop increasing at a certain point or is that risky for an amateur like me?
