Having problems with crocheting a row and it’s measurements

I’m making 2 straps for a back pack and since the hook and yarn I’m using are small I just measure one chain and use it for the next. I keep getting uneven lengths. Any tips? Also does the work lengthen the more chains you add? I’ve been unraveling and unraveling to try and get equal lengths of chains. Since it’s too late and difficult to count stitches
