Tips for alpaca

I love how alpaca feels, and an lucky enough to live near two alpaca farms. I've made a couple hats before but they smarts seem to grow. I've heard that you need to make them smaller than you think but my question is how much. I wear an adult large roughly, should I make a smal width but just as long? Should it be longer? What any hook size, this is dk yarn should I use a 3.75 or 4 which is what I'd burbank do for dk or should I make a bigger hook or smaller.
