How did you get good making colorways?

It seems like everytime I have a vision in mind things get muddled and doesn't turn out how I imagined. My daughter loves purple so I wanted to make a blanket with purple and contrast colors -- I picked a couple slow transition purple colors and some pastel contrast colors. But I end up changing my plan cause the colors don't look as good next to each other as I imagined. Are you guys just better at coming up with choices or what am I missing here?
