Appliques or felt pieces for blanket project?

I'm working on a Halloween granny square project for my cousin's baby shower using the Halloween granny square pattern from raffamusa designs. In the pattern, she uses a mix of embroidery and crochet appliques for the details on the squares. I was worried about the durability of the appliques when it comes to using them for a blanket. I was thinking felt pieces may be more durable and easier to make but I've never seen it done before on anything other than amigurumi. Any suggestions? (Thanks in advance!)
