Alpine stitch question (or a question about counting stitches, in general)...

Argh I’m going nuts over here! I’m following an Alpine stitch blanket tutorial. Instruction says for the initial row, chain in multiple of 2’s and then add 1 more chain for turning. Or something to that effect. Anyways, I started with 170 chains and then added 1. Should I end up with 170 or 171 stitches in all the rows thereafter? After careful counting (and I mean, counting 3 times), I keep ending up with 171 stitches. Help, plz 😅 This is the video I’m following: https://youtu.be/367DBec8HHM
