Help with making a slouchy hat!

I’m working on a slouchy beanie for a friend. I made it so far using a magic ring and working in the round using HDC. It’s also impeccable yarn using 5.5 hook. The issue is it’s not very slouchy! It’s too dense and sticks straight up (a la cat in the hat) if you don’t force it down. Any tips? Am I crocheting too tight or is it the stitch I’m using or the hook size?
