How/when did you start crocheting?

I am curious how and when people began crocheting.
My aunt taught me around 13. She only ever taught me how to do a simple granny square and let me have her scrap yarn. I ended up with the biggest ugliest granny square I've ever seen.
When she taught me she would periodically check my work and if she found a mistake she would frog all the way to the mistake and make me redo it. I remember being so mad at the time, but am thankful now because it has helped me take pride in my work.
I dont finish a project often, but when I do I share a photo with her and thank her again for teaching me.
