Rolling my yarn into a ball?

Hello! I'm brand new to crocheting and am wondering if I need to first roll my yarn into a ball before using it?
Everyone I know does but my first project I used the whole thing of yarn and didn't roll it first. I'm not sure I understand why they do it?
