easier alternative to sugar n cream uarn

i started this pattern for a bag and the author said they recommend sugar n cream yarn, i’ve never used cotton and i’m having so much trouble. i’ve tried doing the loosest stitches possible and still can’t get my hook through the following row. i’d like to use cotton yarn because i like how it doesn’t have the fuzz that other yarn has, but i have restarted this bag like 5 times and am going crazy. any tips??
