Having trouble with the “starburst granny square”

I want to make the sunflower granny square bag, it’s my second project.
I do a slip stitch to join the chain into a loop but after doing the first row of dc’s, it’s like it ends up overlapping itself so I can’t get to the first stitch where I need to fasten off. As a result, my next row ends up not being the correct number of stitches. Does that make sense? This is my first granny square, maybe my tension is too tight or something?
