Opinions: is a 12 inch square too large for a purse?

Hey guys! I've been making bags lately and one thing I want to do is use any of the many 12 inch fancy square patterns to make a bag. I tried this once already, using one square I crocheted from a pattern plus one sc back sized to match, and then I added 2 inch strips between them to make a 3d bag.
I felt this was far too big for a crossbody bag so I'm crocheting handles to it like a tote. But I'm thinking the extra strips I did are what made it just to large, and maybe if I simply made 2 squares, it'd be less huge.
Has anyone else made 12 inch squares into bags? What sort of strap worked best for you? Is it comfy to carry? I know its personal opinion but I'm just wondering if anyone else has tried this and has thoughts on it
