Could this be the problem?

I'm halfway done the plus size version of this pattern. The pattern says use an I hook (5.5). It also says the bust is 56". So I used my I hook, I'm 1/2 way done and the thing is only 12". Less than half as wide as the pattern calls for! (28 in). Then, I look at my I hook, and it says 5.25. Could the difference between 5.5 & 5.25 affect the height of my stitches? THAT MUCH (14")!?!?
Man, unless there is something in the pattern I'm missing, I am going to be PISSED if I have to start over. 500 puff stitches (plus the rest of the garment) down the drain!
