Working into beginning chain-where to put the hook??

Hi! Beginner crocheter here! I am struggling with knowing exactly where to stick the hook into the beginning chain when starting a new project. I thought you were supposed to go underneath the front and back loops (the ‘V’) of the chain but I find it very difficult to get my hook in (maybe i’m just making the chain too tight??) so I started trying just crocheting into the front loops, but I’m not sure if this is correct...
I mainly have made amigurumi and objects in the round (magic circle pro over here), so I’m super confused when working into a chain!! I’ve tried to search online but the pictures/videos are either not clear to see or they vary from one another. Any help would be appreciated!!!
