What will happen if you use 4-weight yarn for a pattern that specifies 5-weight?

I bought yarn solely dedicated to a sweater project today, but discovered that I bought 4-weight rather than 5. Can I just use a bigger/smaller hook size? Pattern says use 5mm hook for a size 2-3T or 6mm hook for a size 5-6T with 5-weight.
What hook size should I use to achieve a 3-4T size with 4-weight yarn? Do I go bigger or smaller? Don’t mind my ignorance as I am (clearly) still an amateur lol!
