Does anybody else find fair isle crochet difficult?

Or is it just me? Not in the sense that the pattern is hard, but getting your hook through the back stitch is so difficult! I was making a beanie but gave up. 😭
Are there any tricks to this? I tried crocheting looser so maybe my hook would go through easier, but no luck. 😪
