Yarn winder help

My wooden yarn winder has been on the fritz for a while, it worked perfectly when I first got it but as of late it has been very annoying to work with, I was wondering if anyone had a fix for some of the issues.
The cakes get wound uneven, and tend to pile up near the middle of the cake a little into winding, making a bump that usually doesn't happen until the very end.
The yarn keeps slipping off the cake as well, causing it to get jumbled up and tangled whenever I use the yarn.
The only thing I see that is broken is the small wooden piece that the spool? (The piece the yarn is wound on) rests on is cracked due to over tighting.
Could this be the problem? And if so is there anywhere i can buy a replacement?
Sorry if this is the wrong sub, I don't know of any general fiber subreddits.
