Can anyone help me with freehanding a project / modifying an existing pattern?

(warning that this post will be a minor spoiler for She-Ra season 5)
I'm hoping to crochet Melog from the show She-Ra (here's a link of what she looks like and here's something similar to the look I want, it's a sewed version done by someone else), but I usually do projects based on patterns, and I've never freehanded an amigurumi before.
Does anyone have tips for freehanding to achieve the right shape for her face? I'm thinking of modifying an existing cat pattern, maybe a pattern for Jiji from Kiki's Delivery Service, but I'm not sure what to do to get the right head shape.
