Weaving in ends

I'm an intermediate crochet-er and a lover of granny squares. However, I am SUPER paranoid about weaving in ends! I always want to weave in at least a couple inches of yarn, which is tedious enough that I generally stick with single-color granny squares.
However, I've seen some gorgeous multi-color granny squares, and I'd love to make those! So I turn to you, my fellow crocheters: How long do you weave in your yarn? Have you ever had trouble with your ends coming unraveled? How much do I really "need" to weave in my yarn to make a secure project?
