Want to make my first blanket but....

But I don’t know how? So far I’ve made projects (scarves) with specific instructions, even telling me exactly what yarn to use. I like following specific things but I feel like I can sort of freely come up with a plan for a blanket. Anyone have any patterns they like? Should I just wing it and do one stitch for the whole blanket? Not looking to do anything special, just different shades of blue. Or all one shade even lol. Just don’t know how to go about starting
