Newbie wants to crochet a baby blanket

I have been wanting to start crocheting and now that my best friend is pregnant, I would love to make them a baby blanket. I am overwhelmed in researching the best material and easiest but still pretty pattern for a beginner.
She is due in June so I have lots of time (I think?). Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
