Hand dyeing yarn for a gift, what type of yarn should I buy for this? (I have zero knowledge of crochet or yarn)

This is an experiment I’ve not tried before so I shouldn’t practice on super high end luxury yarn, but assuming it turns out well I plan to gift it to a crocheter. So I want to get something of a high quality you guys would use in your projects. Any properties and weights that best lend themselves to crochet? Specific brands / products you recommend? 100% cellulose fibers (cotton, rayon, linen etc) work best with the dye I use.

And those of you who dye yarn, I’d love any tips you may have. I’m planning to use procion and potentially indigo.
