Does anyone have any advice for making a strap for a water bottle sling?

So, someone asked me if I could make a water bottle sling with a long strap (to sit at the hip), I foolishly said yes and now I think I’m going insane. How does one crochet a cute, simple strap that also doesn’t stretch to twice its length when you put a full water bottle in it? I tried supplementing with some cord and it looks very goofy.
