Getting started with crochet: Any tips/tricks?

I've always wanted to try crochet and in the past I have purchased some items for it but never really got around to learning it!
The hooks and all the types of loops and most instructions for crochet that I've received in the kits or the things I've read get a bit too overwhelming for me and is confusing at times.
I'd appreciate any tips and tricks to help me get started with crochet!! Thank you in advance!!
