graphgan/tapestry crochet help?

trying to create a graphgan i believe it’s called? i made the pattern myself and have been experimenting with different stitches! i really wanted to do it mosaic crochet style but it looked really ugly :( just not what i was going for. so i did a tiny c2c swatch but wasn’t impressed; i’ve personally never liked the look of them and this didn’t sway me. so i made a little tapestry/intarsia swatch which was a bit of a pain because i floated/cut my colors in the back (and also my stitch technique, but it looks so cool and it’s only scraps so i’m not too upset) and tried a bigger version properly, but... its so stiff ;-;
being an actual blanket would pull it down a lot and help with drape, but... it can only do so much. i realize my tension could have something to do with it, but i also don’t want to see the yarn i’m carrying through my stitches since the finished blanket is going to be black and white.
any tips? how do you make graphgans?
imgur post with regular swatch and mini swatch. excuse the scrap yarn; it’s the same weight/fiber as the project yarn. the pattern i made is all text with a specific pixel look to it; this is the T.
